Hip replacement surgery has become a fairly routine surgery. Of course no one wants to have major surgery, but it’s nice to know that if you have to, people get good results. The two people I know of personally are my mother—she kept putting it off until the pain became unbearable and she couldn’t play tennis anymore. She was in her late seventies and recovered well--she was able to walk much better and felt much more comfortable. Regis Philbin, the TV host, age 78, just had a hip replacement too and seems to be doing very well. Apparently they replace your hip with a plastic or metal piece (prosthesis) that can last from 10 to 20 years.
